SERMC Smart Manufacturing Workshop and Technology Training - NCSU

A workshop/AG meeting, hosted by North Carolina State University, will be held on Monday, December 18 in quick response to CESMII's Dec 4 announcement of its Roadmap Project RFP. The goals will be to provide an overview of Smart Manufacturing and CESMII, to review the RFP and the selection process, to provide a suitable introduction / training session on the Smart Manufacturing Platform and Marketplace, and to work with you on your possible projects. 

The planned agenda will be:

  1. 8:30am: Welcome, Introductions, and CESMII/SERMC Background; About Affinity Groups
  2. 9:00am: RFP: Dates, Conceptual projects, Selection Process, and Contracting
  3. 10:00am: Training case study using Smart Manufacturing Platform and SM Marketplace [How to set up a testbed or application project] 
  4. 12 noon: Lunch (on your own)
  5. 1:00pm: Regional roadmapping: Compare your needs to the CESMII roadmap
  6. 2:00pm: Aid on project development
  7. 3:00pm: Adjourn

If you wish to arrive the night before and stay overnight in Raleigh, two convenient locations are the Marriott Stateview Hotel and the Holiday Inn Express & Suites. We'll send you parking and meeting location details later.

CESMII Roadmap Project RFP - Webinar

CESMII is hosting its very first webinar on the Roadmap Project RFP. This informational Webinar will focus on the CESMII Roadmap Project Request for Proposal (RFP). It will provide an overview of the goals and objectives of CESMII.

CESMII intends to fund Roadmap Projects with the greatest chance of helping achieve the goals and mission of CESMII. CESMII may award an entire proposal or any part of a proposal at a funding level that will be negotiated with the applicant. CESMII may issue awards in one, multiple, or none of the following Technical Areas of Interest (AOI).

SERMC Smart Manufacturing Workshop with Industrial Affinity Group on "SM for Pulp & Paper" Auburn University

A workshop/AG meeting for Tuesday, December 12, hosted by Auburn University, will be held in quick response to CESMII's Dec 4 announcement of its Roadmap Project RFP. We will hold another such training/planning workshop on Dec 18 at NC State (see separate email or contact Phil Westmoreland (prwestmo@ncsu.edu> for more details).

The goals will be to provide an overview of Smart Manufacturing and CESMII, to review the RFP and the selection process, to provide a suitable introduction / training session on the Smart Manufacturing Platform and Marketplace, and to work with you on your possible projects.

Efficient Delivery Methods for Energy and Gases

Manufacturing often requires high velocity/energy gases (e.g., compressed air) for tool power, parts cleaning, parts drying, and parts movement. Compressing gases is expensive and can account for a significant amount of energy used in a manufacturing plant. Innovative, efficient methods are needed to size and deliver compressed gases, or to reduce, mitigate or eliminate their need entirely.

This discussion will identify alternatives that more efficiently generate and deliver compressed gases for critical tooling and parts operations. The focus is on larger scale gas delivery systems.

Sustainable Waste Heat Recovery

Manufacturing processes such as heat treatment are energy-intensive and can be inefficient due to heat losses. Waste heat (energy) is removed or vented to ensure workpiece and equipment health. Capturing and reusing the energy can lower costs and improve system-wide energy efficiency, and sustainability. However, much of the waste heat available in (non-casting) powertrain manufacturing is available at lower temperatures and is not cost-effective or easy to efficiently recapture.

This discussion will identify innovations in cost-effective heat treating and waste heat recovery/reuse technologies and approaches applicable to low-temperature gradients. The focus is on large scale part heating/treating and other heating- or cooling-intensive processes in metal component manufacture.

Smart Flexible Efficient Machining and Manufacturing

Machining operations and tooling are often highly-efficient and well-designed but account for significant electricity use. Meaningful reductions of energy and cost will require more than incremental changes. Smart, flexible game-changing machining and manufacturing approaches are needed to meet needs for…  today’s customized, dynamic, and highly-connected digital production environments.

This discussion will identify technology and process innovations to improve or reinvent machining, tooling, and other manufacturing systems to reduce energy use while maintaining or improving cycle time, cost, and quality. The focus is on manufacturing metal components, such as engines, transmissions, cast or stamped parts, rolled metals, and other parts that require machining or tooling.

Efficient Parts Cleaning

Machining requires parts cleaning operations between process steps to prepare the work piece for the next process step. Cleaning parts is energy-intensive, can require large amounts of solvents and energy, and may produce hazardous wastes and volatile compounds. New energy-efficient paradigms are needed to eliminate or reduce solvents, enable aqueous or other cleaning processes, while still meeting robust specifications for cleanliness and quality.

This discussion will identify revolutionary alternatives to cleaning workpiece surfaces to reduce energy use, while maintaining or improving sustainability and cost. The focus is on large-scale cleaning of metal components although other materials can be considered.
